When I was in the classroom, one thing I dreaded hearing was, "I'm done!! Now, what??" ...even when I felt like I'd prepared for that question time and time again. It happens.

Because I am not a fan of "busy work", I always wanted the "now what" to be a meaningful task. So, a friend of mine shared the idea of a Dictionary Dig, and I just tweaked it a bit to work for my class!

When my kids came in the classroom each morning, they had their usual morning work to complete. Once they finished, they were to look at the board:

I put two words on the board each morning, and the students know to grab a dictionary and begin their search as a part of their morning work. If they happened to finish those two words, I would have them grab a book they are currently reading and find a tricky word to also complete a dictionary search to help them understand that new word as they read!

This Dictionary Search sheet is great for morning work, literacy centers, or just practicing dictionary skills. It's a great way to build vocabulary and makes for a great addition to a writing folder, or even a little book of new words at the end of the year!

...and the best part... ? The "now what" question is always answered!
